The Illusion of memory in the cinematic archive

Examination of how modern cinema uses archival footage to construct posthumous performances, with a strong focus on Carrie Fisher’s appearance in The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Filmmakers recomposed unused footage from earlier productions and built scenes around it. This process demonstrates a shift in film archives from storage spaces to production tools. The paper argues that this method termed archival performance engineering treats archived acting as material that can be reshaped to meet new demands.
